A science-fiction bandage 🩹

Escher Omhulsel

Last week I got COVID19, not very surprising as it seems to be raging here in the Netherlands. Bound to home I was triggered to think about art for our apartment. My partner and I settled on two woodcuts by M.C. Escher. One of those is his partner Jetta, depicted as invisible and wrapped in a bandage. I especially love it because it is said that Escher was not satisfied with the "open ends" of the bandage, which is why he made another version with two heads that picture a continuous bandage.

Later I discovered that Escher was inspired by the science-fiction book The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells which I found on the Gutenberg Project. It is a fantastic 150 page short story and very much worth the read. The book seems to have inspired many, also for example The Invisible Man by Queen.

This weekend (I am allowed to leave the house again tomorrow) we will visit the Escher Museum here in the Hague, the former palace of Queen Emma at the Lange Voorhout.
